We have a Great Dane/Black lab rescue dog that was about a year old when she came to us. She was house-trained and could sit on command, but was quite anxious and hyper around new people. She became comfortable with us after several days, but she barked seriously at anyone else she hadn’t seen before, including Spencer.
We thought we’d either have to give her away or do something to make her better. Spencer took her for two weeks and worked with her to help her overcome her anxieties and become calmer around others.
She’s been home for a few weeks and we have noticed some significant behavior changes. On walks, she is calmer, doesn’t lunge ahead, and comes back beside me consistently when I call her, making walking with her much easier.
Before her training, whenever people would be outside where she could see or hear them, she would try to climb the fence and cry desperately to get to them. It was hard for us to work outside where she could see us for the same reason. However, last weekend there were several people in the backyard near where she was, and she came over nearby and lay down by the fence and patiently watched us. That was a big improvement.
And for some reason she used to always bark at one of my sons when he came around. He was here last weekend also and she only wagged her tail at him this time.
She has been calmer around other people and comes better on command. Spencer has made a big difference in our dog’s behavior and demeaner. He genuinely likes and understands dogs, and is able to identify and effectively work on their specific needs.
